NUKU'ALOFA - Friday, 12th February 2021: Staff of TYEE together with the first 10 Go Green! Youth Volunteers for 2021 hosted a very youthful, memorable, and enjoyable clothing SWAP Event to 30 registered youth participants at TYEE Head Office, Mataika. The participants came from different communities, Havelu, Ha'asini, Fua'amotu, Ma'ufanga, Nukunuku, Fasi moe Afi, Tokomololo, Fanga, Lapaha, Hala'ovave, Hofoa, Longolongo, etc. More than 120 pieces of quality youth fashions, (dresses, skirts, tops, pants, jackets, etc) were recycled and qualified for this SWAP Event. The Go Green! platform provides the youth participants not only with a way for them to appreciate our approach to waste reduction, but also, an affordable alternative to shopping for quality and sustainable fashions. The Event kickstarted with some ice-breaking games, followed by presentations by the TYEE Staff about various areas of their work and the purpose of the Go Green! initiative. Go Green! a youth-led community initiative, established in 2019 to address youth unemployment in making their transitions to work by volunteering at the Go Green! project events to gain some real practical work experience, boost their confidence, validate their soft skills on the job such as teamwork, customer service, punctuality, communications, listening skills, taking initiative, meeting set goals, and much more. The other, to educate our participating youth on ways to reducing waste, caring for the environment while contributing to climate change through the recycling of quality youth fashions. It also, provides an opportunity for the participating youth to be supported and build network of new friendship, utilize their skills and talents to create their own jobs and earn an income to assist themselves and their families. The event ended on a high note with, each participants leaving TYEE with their hands full of quality fashions, meals and drinks were provided on top of the entertaining music, made new friends, debate, and fun activities that filled up the event's program on the day. There is reassurance that more youth will return to our next Event on Friday, 5th March 2021 at TYEE.
